The Leonberg
 

The breed
The Leonberg dog is very big, athletic and muscly. It has a well-proportioned shape and a self-conscious calmness and a cheerful temperament. Particularly the male dogs are powerful.


- Colour: lion-coloured, golden-yellow to red-brown with black mask. Black hair-ends are tolerable.
 There are also sand-coloured digs with dark hair-ends. The deficiency of the black mask is permitted but not  
 desirable.

- Hair: rather long, medium-soft to coarse, tight-fitting with good underwool, never parted or curled, on neck and
breast: mane.

- Tail: very much haired, never rolled over the back.

- Eye colour: preferably dark-brown.
 Shoulder height: male from 72 cm to 80 cm, female from 65 cm to 75 cm,
 Desirable average measure: mal to 76 cm, female to 70 cm.

 

Character
Very friendly "family dog", child-friendly and with big patience! Very devoted to its people, no kennel dog! It is very watchful even when it doesn’t bark very much.
A Leonberger is always aware of his strength – and it is not in need of yapping too much!

It likes the silence, nevertheless it has a medium temperament during playing or walking. Sometimes it is a bit stubborn what demands from the trainer a lot of patience and empathy.

Of course you should put great emphasis on the education as a young dog even if it is a big one.

With a good breeding and socialisation the Leonberger won’t have any deficiencies in its character.

Keeping
For such a big dog you need much space! If possible the Leonberger should stay very often with his family and never in a kennel! A fenced area as space to move in nearby the house is very good.
The Leonberger is a very weather-beaten dog which likes to be outside. Nevertheless it can’t live without the daily walk and the permanent contact with its family!

A big garden can’t be a replacement for the family contact. A Leo can be happy also in a flat if there is enough activity and movement for the dog.

For such big dogs it is not so good to climb the stairs. Of course, a big, long-haired dog brings dirt into the house.

That has to be considered by you before you decide to buy one - thus trouble in the family can be avoided.
Everywhere is to be found Leo’s hair, the „good“ armchair and the expensive carpet will soon look like the Leonberger.

The owner of a Leo will also soon go without black clothes and change to practical, washable clothes where the blond hair is not so well visible.
